This is Hollywood: An Unusual Movieland Guide
Published in Paperback by Ken Schessler (15 February, 2002)
Average review score:

Dead Celebrities RULE!If you're headed to Hollywood and don't believe in corporate pre-determined tourist traps grab this book! Lots of cool places to visit that aren't owned/run by Universal, right down to the spot where Baretta made his last hit! Maybe you'll even see Huggy Bear. And did you know that that crackwhore Pia Zadora leveled Pickfair? You will if you read this guide. Cool stuff.
An Excellent Guide to Hollywood's Sordid PastThis is a great guide for anyone who is interested in the scandals, murders, suicides and hauntings of the Los Angeles area. The information is detailed and accurate, and there are several maps which are good enough that even someone who is not familiar with the area can navigate easily. The book also contains maps to celebrity graves in many area cemetaries. This book is excellent for those who may be visiting LA and want to see some unusual sites; it is also interesting for people who have always lived in LA. Maybe you live next door to the house where Clara Bow "entertained" the entire USC football team and don't even know it! If you're not into the morbid stuff, the book also contains the locations of many sites used in TV and movies. I should also mention that I have found that this latest edition is only readily available from Amazon or directly from the author, so don't go looking for it in your local bookstore.

Thomas Guide 2000 Bay Area: County Coverage of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marine, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties: Digital Edition: 85th Year
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Brothers Map (November, 1999)
Average review score:

Close to a GPS for so much lessBeing new to the bay area need not be daunting anymore. With this book in hand, you can go anywhere you want. All you need is an address. And since the map is in separate A4 size pages, it is very easy to look at different sections at the same time. No need to fold and unfold, no need to be worried about its getting torn.
The maps also have a lookup based on the house numbers. It will be the best investment you will have made in a long long time.
Thomas Bros.--Invaluable tool for the terminally lostIf you live in the Bay Area, the Thomas Bros. map book "Metropolitan Bay Area" is the one volume to keep by your side. It covers just about every single town and street between San Jose and the North Bay. If you're among the terminally lost, this is the book to have...forget those map web sites!

The Thomas Guide 2001 Los Angeles and Orange County : Street Guide and Directory (Bk&Cd Rom ed)
Published in Spiral-bound by Thomas Brothers Map (August, 1900)
Average review score:

The Thomas Guide Revolutionized The World Of Cartography! It is true that the Thomas Guide is the most conclusive map book around! I recently purchased the 2001 LA/Orange Thomas Guide, as well as many others, at the Thomas Brothers store in San Francisco on Jackson and Columbus. They had every Thomas Guide known to man, and wall maps to accompany them!
Best MapsThe Thomas Guide is the definitive map for anyone who needs to find addresses quickly and easily in the Los Angeles area. It lists every street imaginible, even tiny ones like the one near where I live that doesn't even have a street sign, yet Thomas Guide knows its name.
Streets are indexed by street name, making them easy to find in the grid-like maps on each page. There is even a handy zip code listing. Great for sales people and the like who need to find their way through unfamiliar territory quickly and easily. I'd be lost without my Thomas Guide.

You need to get this reference book.If you're at all like me and are just prone to get lost easily or just need to be sure. You need to buy this book. I gave it 5 stars because to the people that know how to read maps well will have no problem getting there way around the book. I think it should have been made just a tad bit easier. For example, connect all the cities page to page, not some cities here, and the connecting ones way on another page. Although it tells you how to read it, and says it was made to be easier to read that way, I haven't tooken the time to learn it. Zipcode finder is another great tool added to this book. It comes with a cd-rom to help find the page you are looking for. Just give it a try. They're known for great maps. Take care.
I couldn't put this down....I couldn't put this book down...especially when I was lost in Downey.
An alltime classic.

Tinsel : a novel
Published in Unknown Binding by Delacorte Press ()
Average review score:

A fictional "Adventures in the Screen Trade."William Goldman's "Tinsel" is a story of Hollywood and the curious and often vulnerable personalities involved in the movie business. Its framing device is the casting of a new movie about the life and death of a sex symbol, loosely based on Marilyn Monroe. We meet the money and creative people behind the movie and the various starlets hoping for a shot at the incredibly juicy role. As usual with a William Goldman novel, we are privy to the thoughts of the various characters and, as usual, there are surprises along the way. But the best thing about the novel is the feeling of Hollywood that it manages to convey, the blend of sordidness and glamour, the money and egos involved in each film, and the terrible attraction that a starmaking role has for actors and actresses. Many authors have tried to bring Hollywood to life in their novels, but few have succeeded as well as Goldman has with "Tinsel."
TinselAs a longtime William Goldman fan, I went into this book expecting to like it. I loved it. Tinsel details the making of a movie; like most of Goldman's books, it's not the story he tells (although it's a fabulous plot) but the way he tells it. In his inimitable way, Goldman rips Hollywood apart and exposes it for everything it is, everything it wishes it was, and everything it can't help being.

Tours for Free California: Southern California & Las Vegas, Nevada
Published in Paperback by Emerson's Eye Press (01 May, 2002)
Average review score:

Good Idea and great toursI bought this book a couple of weeks ago. It really is a fun and interesting twist on entertainment. I was hoping to gain information on the community, and I did. But I also was blown away by how many tours are in this book and how much fun we had. I really enjoyed the golf ball tour and I really liked the vitamin tour. These were unknowns at the time. If I had a grip with the book, it would be that the author put free days of musuems and galleries plus free festival in the back of the book and I don't have enough time to do all the stuff listed in the book. It is a good book though and will get to as much as possible with my schedule, promise!!!
Great chance to see California with no moneyThis book is a great reference if you are thinking about going to Southern California on a limited budget. There are plenty of places the author highlights that are not found in other books (trust me I have purchased plenty of CA books). The tours are appropriate for the kids as well. Plus you have over 100 to choose from, meaning you could tour for weeks on end and still have places to go. If you are vacationing in California, consider getting the book. It is a great find for the limited budget.

Trails & Tales of Yosemite & the Central Sierra
Published in Paperback by Bored Feet Pubns (12 September, 2001)
Average review score:

A Hiker's Hiking BookI have had the pleasure of walking many of the same trails that Sharon writes about in this book. The maps and directions are most excellent--if a description says 3/10 of a mile, then that's what it is. There is nothing quite so frustrating as having a wonderful day of walking planned only to be thwarted by crappy directions to the trail head. The historical focus is like icing on the cake-each of these walks are very enjoyable by themselves but when you have a greater knowledge of place and time, the whole experience is greatly enhanced.
So, even if you've tried other hiking books and been disappointed, don't pass this one by. There is something for everyone here. Highly Recommended and a great read even if you don't get out much!

Seeing the Sierra's via Foot or ArmchairSharon has had agoraphobia for 20 or more years, and yet she has conquered her fears by hiking around 10,000 miles on foot with a friend or two intoe for companionship. She has shared her research and emotions along with the visual descriptions of each of these hikes in her first book. It is a book that will inform and delight every reader, even if you never take that first step upon the worn trail.
She includes facinating tidbits that have been well researched, and provides pictures long buried in private and government archives. Sharon has also tried to inform the reader about the ecological issues surrounding the hikers' intrusion into the delicate terrain of the Sierras. Each chapter is complete, and will leave the reader enthralled and excited for the next "trip"--even without leaving the comforts of one's armchair.
Whether one follows the maps on where to begin one's personal experience by hiking the trail or just reading to enjoy the trip vicariously, this book will be a wellcomed addition to everyone's bookcase who is interested in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Bon Voyage!

Traveling Light : A Year of Wandering, from California to England and Tuscany and BAck Again
Published in Paperback by The Lyons Press (September, 2000)
Average review score:

A "reader friendly" combination travelogue and travel guideBill Barich's Traveling Light is a "reader friendly" combination travelogue and travel guide providing ten chronological chapters from a year of wandering from the Pacific Northwest to Tuscany and back to California. Barich travels around the world and adds wit and wry observation to a fine armchair read.
he's got that rightever since reading barrich's 'laughing in the hills' a few decades ago, i have considered barrich one of the finest articulators of the race track experience. in this latest book, with the chapter titled 'revenge at golden gate' he continues to express the essence of a horse player's experience at the track with wit and insight.
I'm glad the author threw in a book on a colored female, I loved the variety of the snotty sisters, the evil dark haired woman, and the silly blonde. Kind of stereotypical, but very enjoyable.
I only disliked the title of this series, BRIDES OF WILDCAT COUNTY wasn't a nice one to carry around.
